River Island

Yes, Trinidad’s Matura Village is dubbed the ‘Turtle Village’; there is however a great deal of adventuring to do here! The pristine waterways of this region, undoubtedly open a world of exploration opportunities.
Although some may deem this 17km/10.6mi trek a bit lengthy, its terrain is very ‘user-friendly’ and the rewards make it all worthwhile. Splitting it over 2 days however, makes it alot less intense and alot more fun.

Our journey starts approximately 3km/1.9mi inside Thomas Trace, Matura. As we make the approach toward the Matura River you will be immersed more and more by the lush surrounding Rain forest. On entering the river, you get the opportunity to traverse gorges, have some easy going water rides and plunge into crystal clear pools; one of these being deep and large enough to embark on some snorkeling fun!

About 10km/6mi into your trek is where you would set up your hammock camp site as you get ready for your overnight adventure on River Island. If you are up for it there is the opportunity for a night safari.

If we get lucky, on this tour, we may get ‘sneak peek’ encounters with Otters, Collared Peccary or even the elusive Red Brocket Deer.
